Roman Bronze 'Sol Invictus' Ring
ROMAN BRONZE RING with Sun God Symbol
This authentic roman bronze ring was found at a site in Ancient Thrace and dates from the 1st Century AD and is in a style that was popular among Roman craftsmen during the 1st Century in Rome itself.
The ring features a rimmed circular bezel with a "SUN" symbol at it's centre. These sun symbols were extremely popular among many Mediterranean cultures. It traveled west as the symbol of Mithra who was a god that was worshipped in Mesopotamia by various cultures. This symbol was also used in Rome for the worship of Sol Invictus . The shoulders have excellent decorations remaining that really highlight the ring's bezel. The shoulder "escutcheons" on this ring are quite pronounced and are a feature that we do not see on many examples. These escutcheons are also decorated and have an opposing chevron type decoration.
The ring has an odd shape from being worn by the same person for many years so the opening of the band is wider, side-to-side than it is up and down. This makes the ring more snug to get on but fits nicely once over your knuckle. This ring has wonderful colour and shine and will make an excellent addition to ANY collection.
