Roman Bronze Ring LEGIONARY FLORAL CROSS
Sparkling "Flower Cross" Design with Crisp Engravings. This ring was found at a Roman Battlefield site in the Balkans and dates from 300 - 500 A.D.
It features a heavy 18.5mm x 15.5mm oval bezel. The bezel has a well done design that shows us an inner shape made up of highlighted arced lines. In the center of these arcs is a well done "Floral Cross", much like the designs that we see on other Late Empire pieces. It is amazing how deep the four arms of the cross are and how mirrorlike the open areas between them are. There is also a nice crisp outlining of the bezel with its "bottle cap" edge decoration. The band is also heavy and of the 1/2 round variety.
It was common practice for Roman Legionaries to carry pieces of "liberated" jewelry in their purses for use as hard currency when on campaign. They would use them as money for their favorite off-duty activities, namely, wine, women and gambling.
This is a simple yet elegant ring that will complement any wardrobe nicely.
