Roman Copper Ring FANCY AUXILIARY LEGION

This Roman ring was found in Ancient Moesia and dates from 200 - 400 A.D.

The authentic ancient ring is from one of the many Auxiliary Legions that Rome raised from the native levees in her provinces. You will notice in the picture above that this ring was made to use as a seal. The centre of this bezel has a nicely engraved monogram.

The bezel engraving appears to be a fancier version of a "VEXILLIUM" or "War Banner" which was affixed to the standard pole of the legion. It was considered a great honour for a Legionary to be able to carry his Legion's standard into battle and was one of the most sought after honours among Rome's soldiers.

On each shoulder of the ring are the remains of some nice linear engravings that give it the look of a much fancier ring.It is possible that it may have belonged to one of the Auxiliary units that were attached to the 10th Legion. The Romans would levy troops from people who had skills in war that weren't standard to the legions and employ them against their enemies. It was common for career soldiers to move from legion to legion based on which Legate would see the most profitable action and therefore amass more loot for his troops. This ring was probably used to seal dispatches carried by runners between units when on campaign.

This roman ring has so much copper in it that it should mellow into that super, deep plum colour over time. To have a ring with such a Legionary connection is a rare occurrence and to get one in this type of condition is rare indeed.
